Lesson Outline

I am so glad you have an interest in studying with me. Singing has been my passion for most of my adult life. I have studied and performed light opera, rock and roll, R&B, country, musical theater and jazz. I have produced several of my own recordings as well lending my voice to studio sessions for the CDs of other artists. In addition, I have recorded for television, film and radio, all of which have given me a good understanding of both performance and the business of music.

Through developing proper vocal technique and learning musical and performance skills, I will assist you in finding your true voice, enabling you to express yourself more confidently through song. My vocal classes, payment schedule, materials and recitals are outlined below.

Schedule: 1 lesson per week unless otherwise scheduled.
Fee: $50 per 1 hr. voice lesson / $30 per 30 min. lesson

Payments: payments for the month are due on the first scheduled class day of the month. Cancelations are requested at least 24 hr. in advance in order to reschedule the time for another student. Missed lessons may be made up w/i that month.
Materials: (I have most of these on hand at all times)
$20: "Rosemary Butlers" Warm Up and Jam (Vocals Exercise CD) (required) or Jay Clay exercises 1-2
$20: Jay Clayton Jazz Vocal Practice Series (Vocal Exercise Workouts Volume 1-2) (required) or Rosemary Butler exercises

Accompaniment:
Students are accompanied by CD’s from the above collection, CD’s they bring to class, down loaded karaoke material which students should download at home on a disc and bring to class (itunes recommended), or material from my library.
Please bring to class:
a small (3 ring binder)
(small) spiral bound note book for assignments
all materials you are currently working on (or) interested in.
all materials for accompaniment, i.e. CD’s etc.
small photo for student album

Classes:
Focus:
1) vocal exercises for strengthening and pitch control
2) technique: proper placement & breathing, understanding your voice, control
3) basic musicianship, (theory) reading music, playing with accompaniment, improvisation
4) microphone technique
5) expanding repertoire and knowledge of musical styles and genres

*Theory is an important part of general music education. We work out of the theory for vocalist’s book,
Teoria Di Voce: by Sarah Sandvig (essential theory for voice students). This is basic through advanced theory. This book and theory class time is optional. It is, however, tremendously helpful for those who have not played an instrument or have only studied instrumental music for a short period of time. It is also helpful for those who are not yet strong sight readers or who have not studied any theory.

*Warming up ahead of time is recommended. We will exercise during the first part of class if needed and work on songs of students choosing as well as selected material. Students working in Teoria Di Voce will review assignments from the previous week.

Recitals:
Every season we will have a performance opportunity for all students at my home studio or at an arranged location. I will teach all students one common song to be performed as a group.

*We are in the process of planning a once a month group lesson to get all students together to sing, play instruments, learn back up for each other material both instrumentally and vocally and get to know each other and have fun with music. These sessions are TBA.
